| If you need help with your taxes, you don’t have to pay a tax preparer or spend big bucks on tax prep software. The IRS is again offering its Free File program, which partners the IRS with 20 tax software companies to allow taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $52,000 or less in 2006 to electronically file their federal tax returns for free.

Fees of some companies simply to prepare income tax returns can also be outrageous.

As tax return preparation gets under way, agricultural producers need to take a close look at some tax preparation items. “Staying up to date on these items will help producers prepare their returns accurately,” says Ron Haugen, North Dakota State University Extension Service farm economist.

Free tax assistance for low- to moderate-income taxpayers is available through March at UH West O’ahu and Leeward Community College. Students and community members with the program are trained and certified to prepare basic tax returns.
